This is its story. Fender Electric Instrument Company, Fullerton, and That first black Stratocaster was never seen again. After a period experimenting with other guitars, including a sunburst Stratocaster, a brown Telecaster and a white Stratocaster , Gilmour had settled on The Black Strat as his favoured instrument by Throughout the 49 years Gilmour has owned this Stratocaster it has been considered his working guitar, used to test new ideas and to experiment with various modifications. It has been fitted with various pickups, switches, inputs, pickguards, tailpieces and tuners, and undergone no fewer than six different neck changes. All these alterations were performed in order to achieve the dynamics in tonal quality and playability required by David Gilmour at the time. It was a gig that saw the first complete live performance of The Dark Side Of The Moon , a concept album that explored the stresses and pressures of modern life. Gilmour primarily used The Black Strat for his visceral guitar solos, rhythm parts and fills on the album, notably including his astounding solo on Time , and two of the three solos on Money. The guitar truly earned its moniker when Gilmour replaced the standard white pickguard with a custom-made black pickguard which remains to this day, transforming the appearance of the guitar and creating an instantly recognisable all-Black Strat.

I often get asked, how old is my Fender guitar? The Fender numbers tell the story of the company over the years. Unfortunately, the serial number placement is sporadic and many ID numbers over lap between years and models. In many instances, there is no exact known date for a specific guitar. That is why I decided to write this article. I want to help you understand how to tell the age of your Fender as well as any Fender you see. Fender like Gibson has been producing guitars for many years.
Certain styles and colors have come and gone over the years, but there is no real obvious way to tell how old a Fender is other than the identification number.
‘The Black Strat’ — a rock icon
It’s possible that in some body cavity there may be a date as well, (or should be) because part of the problem with dating Fenders, is that.
One-piece solid ash body, medium profile maple neck, and a Brazilian slab rosewood fretboard with 21 frets and clay dot position markers. Single “butterfly” string tree with ‘short’ metal spacer. Four-bolt neck plate with serial number “” between the top two screws. Three staggered-pole pickups with balanced outputs of 5. Three controls one volume, two tone plus three-way selector switch, all on pickguard.
White plastic Stratocaster knobs. This original Stratocaster has no neck date as is usual with examples from this year. Complete with the original tremolo arm. Housed in the original Fender ‘Tweed’ hardshell case with brown leather ends and orange plush lining 8. This date is revealed when the neck is removed or at least loosened from the body, so that its bottom end can be examined.
Help identifying/dating Fender P body
The Fender Musical Instruments Corporation has continuously manufactured the Stratocaster from to the present. It is a double- cutaway guitar, with an extended top “horn” shape for balance. Along with the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Telecaster , it is one of the most-often emulated electric guitar shapes. Guitars that duplicate the Stratocaster by other manufacturers are sometimes called S-Type or ST-type guitars.
The guitar introduced into the popular market several features that were innovative for electric guitars in the mid s. The distinctive body shape, which has become commonplace among electric guitars, was revolutionary for the time period, and for the first time a mass-market electric guitar did not significantly resemble earlier acoustic models.
For what it’s worth, the body dates to 3/58, and the bridge is a non top-loader with smooth steel saddles. Last edited: Jul 7, Like.
Dating a guitar by Serial Number is easy, as long as you know which serial numbers match which years for each guitar model. Comment below your time! Finding your serial number on your Fender should be very easy. They are almost always on either the top of the neck plate the piece of metal on the back of the guitar near the neck , on the headstock the top part of the guitar where the strings attach , or close to the body at the bottom of the neck.
If your serial number has spaces between the first two numbers and the rest of the numbers, starts with a 76, or is only the number refer to chart 2. Note: Only 4 or 5 digits? Date will be under the neck which will have to be taken off. For some of these models, you can find the date by taking off the neck entirely and reading the bottom portion. If your guitar serial number shows you that there is a possibility for more than one year, refer to our fender research guides section to get a more accurate timespan.
1959 Orig Fender Strat Body 12/59 Body Date.. EXCELLENT SHAPE!
In late , Fender decided to move to a new numbering scheme for their serialization. The numbers appeared on the pegheads and for the remainder of they had a prefix of 76 or S6 preceding a 5 digit sequence. In , the serialization went to a letter for the decade, followed by a single digit for the year and then 5 to 6 digits. I Do not know if you see what is happening here! Sometimes instrument production did not meet the levels for which decals were produced—thus there are some overlapping years.
And then you take off ther neck and find out it is 8 months or even a year off from the serial number!
This article is intended to help you date your Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster, and Precision Bass guitars all the way back to the early s. Fender serial numbers
May 24, 1. May 29, Europe. A good friend of mine has a nice, beaten up maple neck P-bass in his studio.
When I run my headstock serial through the fender site it tells me it’s a highway one tele. The neck date stamps confirm that. However.
Question – any tips on making sure it’s not a partscaster? The neck stamp and heel plate are obvious, but since the body is stripped and it’s had a re-wire, any vague certainty that it’s nothing more than a body stuck on an old neck with some old pots? Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone. Not a case of knowing what he’s talking about, I’m sure he does – doesn’t mean I’m afraid that matches the advert. Thanks chaps – will try and get a picture of under the scratchplate, I think it’s slightly odd that’s not included.

How can I find out when my American-made instrument was manufactured?
W hen I was a kid, vintage Stratocasters were invariably loaded with retrofit pickups and tuners, locking trems and brass hardware. Nowadays, hacked-up vintage Strats rarely surface, and I often wonder where they all ended up. It seems most likely that some have been restored and are being passed off as all-original, while others have been disassembled to sell off the parts.
Hidden inside the body is a three-piece system designed by Fender with the folks at Fishman, a company famous for its acoustic guitar pickups. .

Ever since Fender started making basses in , they dated certain parts and components to give a general idea of when the instrument was produced. Then there are pickup and potentiometer date codes, serial numbers, and even bridge stamps and pickguard codes in some cases. So how do you properly determine the year of production? They just grabbed whatever part or component was ready and put the instrument together to fill an order as fast as possible.

Inside a Fender Jazzmaster. Inside a to Fender Telecaster video. Inside a to Fender Stratocaster video. For most collectors, pre-CBS pre Fender vintage guitars and amps are the desirable ones. Although CBS purchased Fender officially on January 3rd , it took some time till the guitars changed though by mid , six months before CBS bought Fender, things were already “on the way down”.
By the end of , the general look and feel of the Fender guitars had changed significantly. All collectors feel the quality of their instruments and amps suffered as CBS employed more “mass production” manufacturing processes to the Fender guitars. The “large peghead” starting in late as used on the Fender Stratocaster was one example of the bad changes to come.
The “custom contoured” bodies Fender was famous for no longer were as sculped and sleek. Newer and less attractive plastics were used for the pickguards. Pearl fingerboard inlays replaced the original “clay” dots. Indian rosewood replaced the beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood on the fingerboards.
